A 50-year-old man died at his home in the Trakia district of Plovdiv on 6 January 2023 after four shots were fired from his own gas pistol. His girlfriend, then 23 years old and 27 years younger than him, was in the flat at the time and was arrested and charged with intentional murder. On the court's account of the evidence, the two had been drinking at the flat that afternoon. The man became angry at a telephone call from the woman's partner, took her phone and forbade her to answer it. A struggle followed. On the defendant's account he threatened to kill her, struck her head against the wall twice, took the gas pistol from under his pillow and held it to her head; she tried to push his hand away and shots were fired. Her two accounts to investigators differed as to whether she then fired further shots. She called the emergency services, but paramedics could only confirm his death. On 7 October 2026 the Plovdiv District Court acquitted her. The judges held that the charge had not been proved beyond doubt and that it had not been established that the fatal shot was fired by the defendant; the civil claims brought by the victim's relatives were rejected. The verdict is not final and is open to appeal before the Plovdiv Court of Appeal.
