On or about 7 April 2023 a woman was killed in Katwijk, Zuid-Holland, stabbed repeatedly with a dagger or knife in the chest, abdomen, neck and back. The suspect was her former partner. On 7 September 2026 the district court in The Hague convicted the man, then 43, of murder, finding the killing both intentional and premeditated. It sentenced him to fifteen years' imprisonment and imposed a hospital order with compulsory treatment, concluding that a pathological disorder of the mental faculties was present at the time of the offence and had contributed to it, and that the order was necessary to protect the safety of others. The court reached that conclusion despite the defendant's refusal to cooperate with psychiatric assessment. It also convicted him in a joined case of possessing a large quantity of child sexual abuse material, found that the reasonable-time requirement had been exceeded, and awarded compensation to the victim's next of kin, including damages for shock.
