Sommario

A 78-year-old woman, weakened by cancer, was stabbed twelve times in the upper body shortly after midnight on 16 August 2025 as she slept in the living room of her daughter's home in Geneva. Her granddaughter, who was suffering a severe episode of schizophrenia, took a large kitchen knife from the kitchen and attacked her after hearing voices telling her to kill her grandmother. The victim's daughter — the attacker's mother — witnessed the attack. At the hearing before the Geneva Tribunal correctionnel on 7 October 2026, the defendant said of the episode that she could have chosen not to listen to the voice, but that it had dominated her and she had felt hatred. During the investigation she also spoke of anger accumulated in childhood, and said she had struck until she felt better. The court held that the facts constituted assassination. Because she was found criminally irresponsible, she could neither be convicted nor sentenced; the court instead ordered an institutional therapeutic measure to prevent any recurrence, so she remains confined in Geneva. The victim's daughter attended the hearing both to honour her mother's memory and to support her own daughter, saying she had forgiven her because she was ill.
