A 17-year-old girl from Abcoude was killed in the early hours of 20 August 2025 beside a cycle path in Duivendrecht, south-east of Amsterdam, as she rode home on her electric bicycle after a night out. At about 04:00 she called the emergency number herself to say she was being attacked. Police rushed to the scene but arrived too late and found her body on the verge beside the water. She had been stabbed, among other injuries, in the neck. The killing caused shock across the Netherlands. A man of about 23 was arrested and charged with her murder, together with a violent rape in Amsterdam on 15 August 2025 and an attempted rape with aggravated assault on 10 August 2025. The case opened with a first pre-trial hearing at the Amsterdam court on 25 November 2025. At a second hearing on 11 February 2026 he confessed to all three offences. In April 2026 the court ordered further observation of the suspect at the Pieter Baan Centre, the national forensic psychiatric observation clinic, and set the substantive trial for 18, 20 and 22 January 2027. At a brief pre-trial hearing on 15 September 2026 it emerged that the clinic's report on his mental state would not be ready before the end of October.
