A four-year-old boy and his grand-aunt died in a house fire at Castleview Park, Edenderry, Co Offaly, on 6 December 2025. The boy's grandmother was also in the house at the time and survived. Ten months later, a 22-year-old man with an address in Co Kildare was charged at Tullamore District Court with the murder of both. A detective gave evidence of charging him, and said he made no reply after caution. He was also charged with assault causing serious harm to the boy's grandmother. The accused had previously been charged with arson at the same house, and that charge remains before the court along with a charge of endangerment on the same date. The endangerment charge was amended at the hearing, with the judge permitting it to allege that he broke the front window of the house and intentionally caused a fire that created a substantial risk of death or serious harm to four named people. The Director of Public Prosecutions has directed trial by indictment on the new charges. There was no application for bail, and the accused was remanded in custody to appear again on 28 October 2026, when a book of evidence is to be served. His full address cannot be published by order of the court.
