An 87-year-old woman was killed on 19 January 2026 in her room at a senior residence in the Döbling district of Vienna. According to the indictment, the suspect went to her room, pushed her onto the bed, strangled her and is believed to have suffocated her with a pillow. He is then alleged to have opened the safe in her room and taken the jewellery inside it along with at least 500 euros in cash. The suspect and the victim had known each other for some time. He is reported to have been a regular visitor to the residence, where a relative of his partner lives. From December 2024 onwards he is said to have repeatedly borrowed money from the woman, ending up owing her more than 20,000 euros which, contrary to an agreement between them, he did not repay. The 61-year-old has been charged with murder and is due to stand trial at the Vienna regional court on 13 August 2026.
