A businessman was shot dead in Plovdiv at about 01:00 on 30 September 2026. Police received a report of a man having been shot roughly an hour after midnight and confirmed his death when they reached the scene. He had been shot in the head with a firearm at a property he owned in the city's Западен (Western) district, and according to initial police information the attack came after he returned home from the Botev Plovdiv stadium. The victim was the majority owner of the football club Botev Plovdiv and, since August 2026, chairman of its board of directors; he was also a co-owner of one of the country's largest logistics companies. In 2025 he had undertaken to cover the club's debts of nearly seven million leva and had pursued a long concession of the club's stadium from the municipality. In recent years he had publicly accused local companies and businessmen of exercising control over the police in Plovdiv. Police sealed off the scene and forensic officers carried out examinations there. A special investigative staff was formed, police presence was increased at the main exit routes from Plovdiv and border controls were tightened. Officers were also seen checking municipal refuse lorries travelling towards a depot outside the city, which was assumed to be part of the search for traces connected to the killing. Investigators declined to say at this stage whether any suspect had been identified or whether there were witnesses, and said no line of inquiry was being excluded. The Plovdiv district prosecutor said it was too early to settle on a single version and that all possible evidence was being gathered. The motive had not been established.

A 33-year-old woman was killed with a bladed weapon at a dwelling on calle Joan Fuster Zaragoza in Benidorm, Alicante, in an incident reported on 28 September 2026. Police said formal identification of the body was still outstanding. The victim had made no previous complaints of domestic violence against her partner.

Three people were injured in an attack at a service station on via Martiri di Cervarolo, in the Buco del Signore district of Reggio Emilia, on the evening of Sunday 27 September 2026. All three were taken urgently to the Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova and none was in a life-threatening condition; the local health authority described their injuries as orthopaedic trauma. According to the health authority, a 66-year-old woman was attacked first, with a screwdriver, and was due to undergo surgery. Two people who came to her aid were also injured: a 49-year-old man, operated on overnight and admitted to a general ward, and a 24-year-old woman, who was expected to be discharged the same day. The suspect, a 26-year-old man, was arrested an hour after the attack and held in custody pending a validation hearing. He is to answer for aggravated attempted homicide. A man was shot dead shortly after 15:00 on the afternoon of Friday 25 September 2026 on a crowded restaurant terrace on the NDSM quay in Amsterdam-Noord. Many people were on the terrace at the time. A witness eating in the restaurant with his wife described hearing two loud bangs, people running into the building, and then learning that they had been shots. The couple hid under a table before leaving with everyone else. Other customers told a city newspaper that an argument over a loose dog had preceded the shooting. Footage published shortly after the killing appears to show the suspect throwing the firearm used moments earlier into the water, and shouting in the direction of the terrace. A Tunisian man died on 25 September 2026 after being stabbed at the height of an argument during the preceding night in the Golosine district of Verona. Ambulance crews took him in a very serious condition to the Borgo Trento hospital, where he died shortly afterwards of the severity of his injuries. On a first reconstruction, reported in conditional terms, the victim is said to have been involved in a dispute with a group of Polish nationals described as drivers of the golf carts that carry tourists around the city centre. The suspected killer was detained and was being held at police headquarters in Verona. No charge had been confirmed at the time of reporting.

A 29-year-old police officer was shot in the head and killed during a police operation at Kraśnik Górny, near Bolesławiec in Lower Silesia, on Thursday 24 September 2026. Officers from the district police headquarters in Bolesławiec were carrying out operational activities against a person suspected of thefts. At about 11:00 a shooting broke out on the grounds of one of the properties. According to the regional prosecutor's office in Jelenia Góra, a 33-year-old man who returned home while the police operation was under way fired twice in the direction of the officers. One of the bullets struck the 29-year-old officer in the head. An air ambulance was called immediately and flew him to hospital, where doctors fought for many hours to save his life. He did not survive. The death was reported on 25 September. The man who fired was detained at the scene by the remaining officers and was not injured.

A priest was killed and four other people were injured in a knife attack at the convent of the Benedictine Sisters in Jarosław, in Podkarpackie voivodeship, before midday on Thursday 24 September 2026. On the investigators' account, the suspect entered the convent kitchen, took a knife and attacked five people — four men and a woman. The priest, who had tried to stop the attacker, died. Two of the injured remain in a serious condition in hospital in Jarosław, and their condition had not worsened as of the Friday. The injured woman is being treated in hospital in Przeworsk. On 26 September a court granted the district prosecutor's application and imposed three months' pre-trial detention on the suspect, a 31-year-old Ukrainian citizen, running until 23 December 2026. The court specified that the detention should be served in hospital conditions. The suspect was not brought to the hearing because of his state of health, and is to be placed in a medical facility with a reinforced security wing; the prosecution has not disclosed which.

The dismembered body of a 39-year-old man was found on the evening of Thursday 24 September 2026 in an apartment in via Gulli, in the Borgo Vittoria district of Turin. He was from Chivasso, in the province of Turin. According to the prosecution's account he was killed by blows from a club and by stab wounds. The investigation began with a call to the emergency number from the mother of a 26-year-old man, who told police in distress that her son had confessed to having badly hurt someone. On the direction of the Turin public prosecutor's office, police placed three people under a holding order. A man is suspected of homicide and of concealment of a corpse. Two women, one of them the tenant of the apartment where the body was found, are suspected of aiding an offender and of joint participation in the concealment of the corpse. The tenant, a 47-year-old teacher, had not appeared at the school where she worked since the start of the academic year, and colleagues had been asking for weeks where she was. Investigators are still working to establish whether the victim was killed in the apartment or brought there already dead. One line of inquiry concerns a drug debt. The prosecutor's office said it would put its requests on the validation of the holding order and on the detention of those held to the judge for preliminary investigations, and the validation hearing was set for the afternoon of 26 September 2026.

A 36-year-old woman was fatally injured in a knife attack at around 12:25 on Wednesday 23 September 2026 in a municipal accommodation facility on the Grimpingstraße in Coesfeld, North Rhine-Westphalia. Witnesses found her with stab wounds to the upper body at her home address. She died at the scene despite immediate resuscitation attempts. Reporting describes her as a mother of three. A 60-year-old man died in a fire in the ground-floor bedroom of a house on the Hoogleedsesteenweg in Roeselare in the early hours of 23 September 2026. The fire broke out at around 00:30 and burned fiercely around the bed; he was found dead in it. His partner was seen at a window in panic when firefighters arrived. They broke the window to bring her out, and she was taken to hospital after inhaling smoke. The rest of the house was undamaged, and a stretch of the road was closed to traffic for a long period while the scene was cordoned off. A support team was called out for the firefighters, who were badly affected by what they found. An investigating judge and court-appointed fire experts were seized to establish the circumstances. Accelerants were found at the scene, pointing to arson. On 24 September the investigating judge in Kortrijk placed the victim's 61-year-old wife under arrest warrant on suspicion of murder, the prosecutor's office for West Flanders reported; the victim is reported to have been doused in petrol.

Several residents called the emergency number at around 21:50 after hearing a number of shots on the Terbaansweg. A trauma helicopter was among the services called out. The victim was given resuscitation at the scene but died there. Part of the street was cordoned off, and many residents gathered outside afterwards. A police forensic team examined the scene. Officers collected footage from security and doorbell cameras in the neighbourhood and spoke to possible witnesses. In the days that followed no arrest was made and the investigation team appealed for anyone who had seen or heard something to come forward. On Thursday 24 September two men reported themselves to the police and were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the shooting. No charge has yet been reported.

That evening officers traced a second Egyptian man, aged 27, identified as having taken part in the assault. He was found with three grams of hashish and was reported to the authorities. The Questore of Padua ordered his transfer to a detention centre in Milan and began proceedings to revoke the arrested man's residence permit.

The attack was recorded by a surveillance camera. Prison officers who heard screams arrived within moments and attempted resuscitation, but he died of several stab wounds to the chest. A 63-year-old fellow inmate is suspected of the killing and has confessed. On the morning of 11 September 2026, shortly before lessons began at about 08:00, a pupil was stabbed at a secondary technical school in the Voltino neighbourhood of Zagreb. A pupil at the school wounded another pupil and a school cleaner with a knife; the attack took place in front of the toilets. The wounded boy was taken to the university hospital centre in Zagreb with severe, life-threatening injuries, including stab wounds to the chest and abdomen. He was operated on and moved to paediatric intensive care. The deputy director of the hospital said that evening that he was not yet conscious and could not communicate, that his condition was under control and there were so far no complications, and that doctors expected him to begin breathing on his own during the night. His mother was with him. The cleaner was also seriously injured. A senior official at the education ministry praised her, saying she had been at her post, had acted with great courage when the commotion broke out and had prevented the tragedy from being even greater. The official said the wounded pupil and the pupil suspected of the attack are both first-year pupils who had been at the school for five days and had attended the same primary school. He would not confirm whether a quarrel preceded the attack, saying the investigation was still under way and the facts would be known once the police reported. A crisis team remained at the school through the day and was to continue offering support to pupils and staff over the weekend and the following week. On 12 September Zagreb police said they had completed their investigation. They filed a criminal complaint against the suspect, a minor, for attempted aggravated murder of the wounded pupil and attempted murder of two school employees, both aged 59: the cleaner who was stabbed, and a second employee he tried to injure with a sharp object. He was also reported for violating the rights of nine children who were nearby during the attack. Staff overpowered him and held him until police arrived. An investigating judge ordered him held in pre-trial detention because of the risk of influencing witnesses and of reoffending.

A man was stabbed in the throat under the porticoes of piazza Garibaldi in Novara, by the city's railway station, on 10 September 2026. Police were alerted to a man wounded in the neck by a bladed weapon and established that the victim had been struck in the throat at the culmination of a quarrel that officers described as being over trivial matters. The blow lacerated his jugular vein, and the wound was judged so serious that the officers took him to hospital themselves. He survived. His attacker fled the scene immediately on an electric scooter. The following day the mobile squad identified the attacker from CCTV footage and interviews with people informed of the events, and submitted a report to the prosecutor asking for a precautionary measure to be considered. The measure was granted by an order issued on the evening of 28 September. On 29 September the suspect, a 25-year-old man of no fixed abode with previous convictions, was located by investigators in the area of Vercelli railway station and arrested on a charge of attempted murder. He was found in possession of 29.2 grams of hashish and reported at liberty for a separate offence of possession for the purpose of dealing. He was taken into custody at the disposal of the judicial authority.

The body of a 40-year-old woman was found at about five in the morning on Tuesday 8 September 2026 in a burning garage at a house in Launaguet, a commune north of Toulouse in Haute-Garonne. Her body was badly burned. An investigation was opened for the murder of a partner, led by the Toulouse Saint Michel gendarmerie research brigade. The victim's former partner, a 54-year-old man, was found nearby with a serious head injury and in a life-threatening condition. According to the prosecutor's office he was carrying a handgun that may have fired the cartridge case recovered from the garage. Early on Sunday 6 September 2026 — reported at about 06:30 — the GNR was alerted by residents and family members that a 73-year-old woman had been found dead inside her home in the village of Póvoa da Galega, in the parish of Milharado, Mafra, in the district of Lisbon. She had been stabbed. The suspect is her grandson, who lived with her; according to a police source the motive is unknown and the two had a good relationship. After the killing the suspect is reported to have caused disturbances and damage at a hotel and at several homes near the one he shared with his grandmother. He was detained by the GNR and the investigation passed to the Polícia Judiciária. Brought before a judge at the court in Sintra for a first judicial questioning, he was remanded in custody at the Lisbon prison to await trial.

Der Mitarbeiter ging mehrfach zu Boden. Schließlich überwältigten Passagiere den Angreifer. Der Verletzte musste vom Rettungsdienst versorgt werden. Der 22-jährige Tatverdächtige, der nach Angaben der Polizei angetrunken war, kam am 15. September in Untersuchungshaft. Die Staatsanwaltschaft Cottbus ermittelt gegen ihn wegen versuchten Totschlags.

L'uomo, di 36 anni, si è poi tolto la vita gettandosi dallo stesso viadotto. La donna, che aveva con sé un telefono cellulare rimasto nel bagagliaio, avrebbe chiamato il 112 e un amico per chiedere aiuto; accortosi del telefono, l'uomo avrebbe fermato l'auto e glielo avrebbe strappato. La segnalazione ha fatto scattare le ricerche dell'auto: gli agenti della polizia stradale hanno trovato il veicolo fermo sulla corsia d'emergenza e i due corpi sotto il viadotto. Le indagini, coordinate dalla procura e condotte dalla squadra mobile di Firenze, stanno ricostruendo se la donna sia stata uccisa prima di essere gettata dal viadotto. La relazione tra i due era terminata da poco tempo.

De groep bestaat uit zestien Fransen, elf Nederlanders, twee Algerijnen, een Libiër, een Oekraïner en een Belg; twee van hen zijn minderjarig. De rechter-commissaris besloot dezelfde dag dat zij allen zeker veertien dagen langer vastzitten. In september 2026 boog de raadkamer van de rechtbank in Arnhem zich over de voorlopige hechtenis van de aangehouden verdachten. Op 16 september besloot de raadkamer dat veertien van hen negentig dagen langer vastzitten; op 18 september volgden er nog dertien, van wie elf meerderjarigen negentig dagen langer vastzitten en twee minderjarigen vijfenveertig dagen. De groep wordt daarnaast verdacht van voorbereidingen voor moord, doodslag, gijzeling, vrijheidsberoving en wapenbezit. De inhoudelijke behandeling van de zaak moet nog beginnen.

Three men were taken to hospital after a stabbing on the De Ruijterkade, behind Amsterdam Centraal station, on the evening of 29 August 2026. Emergency services were called at about 19:30 and several ambulances and police units attended. Four men were injured in total. One of them was arrested at the scene as a suspect. Police said none of the injured was in a life-threatening condition. Footage circulating on social media shows a man who appears to have been involved in the incident broadcasting a live stream, in which he argues with a group of men and says, among other things, that he is not afraid of six or seven men and that "they are all going to fall". He then lunges at one of the men and stabs him, which police have confirmed. The group then set upon him, punching and kicking him, and one of them appears to stop the camera. The suspect, a 43-year-old man from Naarden, was among the four injured and was himself taken to hospital. He is accused of stabbing three men. He was due to be brought before an examining magistrate on 1 September 2026. On 15 September 2026 the Public Prosecution Service confirmed that his pre-trial detention had been lifted. He remains a suspect, invokes self-defence, and the investigation continues. The injured men taken to hospital were able to go home the same day or the next.

A murder investigation has been launched after a woman's body was found in a park in Liverpool on 28 August 2026. Merseyside Police were called to Stanley Park at about 17:25 BST and found the body, in a black bin bag, in bushes in part of a walled garden between the Anfield and Goodison Park grounds. The force said the body was that of a white woman in her 70s, and that it could have been in the park for a number of weeks. She was described as about 5ft 2in tall, of small build, with strawberry blonde hair, and was found wearing a cerise pink t-shirt. The description was issued by police because the victim had not yet been identified. The detective superintendent leading the investigation said the force was doing everything in its power to find whoever was responsible, and appealed to walkers who had been in the park — and specifically in the area of the walled garden — in recent days or weeks to come forward with any information. Officers kept an area inside the park cordoned off and a mobile police station was to be set up there the following day. Two weeks later the woman had still not been identified. Members of the public had supplied 73 names, all of which were checked and eliminated; it had not been possible to compare dental records, and forensic tests produced no match on the national DNA database. Officers had taken CCTV from 30 private and commercial cameras in the area and had spoken to the occupants of 625 properties around the park, and were appealing to anyone who had flown a drone over the park in recent months to check their footage. The senior investigating officer said the investigation remained ongoing and that the force remained determined to identify the woman and to find the person or persons responsible for her murder.

A 44-year-old woman survived an attempt on her life at the port of Cattolica, in the province of Rimini, on 20 August 2026. Her husband, a 45-year-old man of Albanian origin resident at San Giovanni in Marignano, was detained the same evening on suspicion of attempted murder. A 44-year-old Albanian man was stabbed repeatedly in piazzale Napoli at Milano Marittima, a seaside district of Cervia in the province of Ravenna, at around 1am on 16 August 2026, during the Ferragosto weekend. He survived. A police patrol on extraordinary territorial control duty was approached by a passer-by who said he had just witnessed a stabbing. Officers found that a heated argument had broken out in the square between two men, one of whom, armed with a flick knife, struck the other several times. The victim, a resident of Forlì who was in the area for leisure, was taken urgently to the Bufalini hospital in Cesena and operated on. The medical report recorded at least five stab wounds — to the abdomen, the chest, the left cheek and the ear — together with rib fractures on his left side. He was given a thirty-day prognosis and remained in hospital at the time of the cited reports. On the late afternoon of 19 August 2026 officers of the Ravenna flying squad traced a Tunisian man in his forties in a public park in the Tagliata area of Cervia and arrested him. At police headquarters he was identified as the man indicated by both the victim and a witness as the attacker. He is accused of attempted murder aggravated by futile motives. No motive has been established, and the knife was not recovered.

A prison officer who fired three shots from his service pistol, hitting him with one, is under investigation for attempted homicide. According to the public prosecutor, the man, a Moroccan national and a former inmate of the Dogaia prison in Prato who had been released in June, had been stopped that afternoon while trying to throw a package containing narcotics into the prison. The shots caused alarm among patients and staff in the department, which was temporarily closed while the scene was made safe and forensic examinations were carried out. Patients already there were looked after. The officer, who had been in service for 18 months, has been questioned. His defence lawyer says his client's conduct is covered by a clear justification and has asked for the application of a recent security decree amending article 335 of the code of criminal procedure, which provides for a preliminary annotation that avoids automatic entry in the register of suspects where an act performed on duty suggests a ground of justification. A government minister publicly rejected the attempted-homicide framing and said the officer had done his job.

Two men were stabbed inside a nightclub on the plaza Salamero, in the centre of Zaragoza, at about 5.30am on 2 August 2026. Both survived. Officers were alerted by several calls to the emergency line reporting a stabbing inside the venue. On arrival they found a man lying at the entrance with two knife wounds, to the abdomen and to a thigh, bleeding heavily. They gave first aid until the ambulance service arrived and took him urgently to hospital. While gathering information, officers found a second victim inside: the venue's security guard, who had a knife wound to one leg and was bleeding significantly, and who was also treated by the emergency services. The attackers had left before police arrived. Over the following weeks investigators analysed the available footage and witness statements and reconstructed the events. They concluded that one of the alleged attackers had stabbed the two victims at least four times in total, that a second had inflicted a head injury on one of them, and that a third had caused minor injuries around the eye of the other. On 20 August 2026 the national police arrested two men aged 24. One, who has nine prior police records, is accused of causing grave bodily harm; the other, who has four, was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide. Both were brought before the duty court the following day, which remanded the alleged author of the attempted homicide in custody and released the second on charges. A third person has been identified and is under investigation for a minor injuries offence.

A 54-year-old man was beaten to death in the car park of viale Tritone at Pinarella di Cervia, on the Ravenna coast, during the night of 18–19 July 2026. He was living in a camper van parked there. According to the investigators' reconstruction, he was confronted in the car park near his camper van, tried to get away, and was caught and struck repeatedly with kicks and punches to the head and chest, including after he was already on the ground. He managed to move a few metres before collapsing beside the tyre of a lorry. Carabinieri who had been called to the area on the morning of 19 July over damage to a nearby camper van found him lying seriously injured with clear signs of the beating. He was taken to the Bufalini hospital in Cesena, where he died of his injuries on 22 July. On 7 August 2026 four young people aged between 19 and 23, from the Forlì area, were detained and taken to prison, accused of aggravated joint homicide committed for futile motives. Investigators reached them through footage from public and private CCTV cameras and from a lorry's dash cam, cross-checked with police databases, witness statements, wiretaps and surveillance. No prior connection between the group and the victim has emerged, and the motive is still to be established. The investigation, coordinated by the Ravenna prosecutor's office, is not concluded. The municipality has said it intends to join any trial as a civil party.

A 42-year-old man died on the morning of 19 July 2026 in via Svevo, in the Pilastro district of Bologna, during a police intervention prompted by reports of a man causing a disturbance in a garage. Officers used pepper spray and then restrained him face down on the ground with his wrists and ankles bound. Video footage circulated afterwards records him calling out for help before losing consciousness; he died during or immediately after the restraint. A Bologna prosecutor has opened an investigation into the death as negligent homicide and police body-camera footage has been made available to it, while the local health authority has begun an internal inquiry. The two police officers who carried out the restraint have been formally registered as suspects, and the position of four Red Cross volunteers who intervened after the immobilisation is also being assessed. An autopsy was carried out on 24 July: a CT scan showed the lungs full of blood and the examination recorded compression of the body without significant bone fractures, but the medical examiner described the examination as very complex and said further test results must be awaited. Whether the compression occurred before death or during attempted resuscitation has not been established, and no cause of death has been formally certified. The victim's relatives have publicly alleged that he was beaten and killed, and a parliamentary inquiry has been announced.

He was hit in the leg and was taken by ambulance crews to the emergency department of the Gemelli teaching hospital. He survived the shooting. A man was shot dead in Toulon, in the Var, during the week of 13 to 19 July 2026. He and his attacker had argued beforehand and had arranged to meet through social media. The attacker waited at a concealed position and fired twice at the victim's car as it arrived at the agreed place; one round struck the driver in the head, and the vehicle crashed. Emergency services took him to the nearest hospital in a critical condition, where he died shortly afterwards. Several witnesses told French police they had seen the suspect carrying a firearm near the scene. The gunman fled. French investigators established that people close to him had given him money and driven him by road to Barcelona so that he could leave the European Union as soon as possible. The Toulon public prosecutor's office issued an international arrest order on the day of the killing, and French authorities issued a European Arrest and Surrender Order and asked the Spanish National Police for assistance. Officers from the fugitives group of the provincial judicial police brigade placed the hotel where he was believed to be staying under surveillance and arrested him there on 24 July 2026. A Barcelona court ordered his immediate surrender to France, where the offence carries a sentence of life imprisonment.

Il 5 settembre 2026 i carabinieri hanno eseguito un'ordinanza di custodia cautelare nei confronti dei due indagati, entrambi 17enni, accusati di tentato omicidio in concorso e trasferiti nell'Istituto penale per i minorenni di Catanzaro. Le indagini, coordinate dalla Procura della Repubblica presso il Tribunale per i minorenni, hanno ricostruito la dinamica attraverso le immagini della videosorveglianza e le testimonianze raccolte.

The remains of two young soldiers from French Polynesia were recovered in the Bouches-du-Rhône in July 2026, several years after their families reported them missing. Six adult members of one family, originally from New Caledonia and living in the Claret quarter of Toulon, have been under formal investigation since May 2026 for murder, human trafficking, unlawful imprisonment by an organised gang and failure to report crimes, the exact grounds varying between them. Five of the six are in pre-trial detention. According to the Toulon public prosecutor's office, the family is suspected of having exploited the isolation of young servicemen who had come from the Pacific islands to be stationed in Toulon, robbing them, assaulting them and holding them captive in the Toulon area between 2011 and 2023. Seven other young Polynesian soldiers told investigators they had been "progressively stripped of their means of payment and their identity documents, assaulted and held captive". Residents of the quarter, where the Polynesian community is large, described the family arriving at parties at their height with alcohol and provisions. The investigation was still under way at the time of the cited report.

An off-duty local police officer in Gijón, Asturias, narrowly avoided a crash on 22 June 2026 after the front brake of his private motorcycle failed as he rode away from where he had parked it, in the La Arena district. He needed his riding skill to avoid an accident. Mechanics who examined the machine found that the front brake's hydraulic circuit had been deliberately tampered with by draining the brake fluid, and ruled out an accidental fault. Investigators from the local judicial police brigade used witness statements and CCTV footage to place a 68-year-old man at the scene and attribute the sabotage to him. He had known the victim previously through the officer's professional work and involvement in various police and administrative actions. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide and brought before the duty court, which released him with charges and barred him from approaching or contacting the victim.

Two people were killed and six injured on 4 May 2026 when a man drove a car several hundred metres through the pedestrian zone in the centre of Leipzig, striking a number of people. A 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man died. The six injured were aged between 21 and 87, two of them seriously. The driver brought the car to a stop himself and allowed himself to be arrested without resistance. He was initially placed in a psychiatric hospital. On 28 August 2026, nearly four months after the attack, the public prosecutor's office charged the 33-year-old German with two counts of murder and 85 counts of attempted murder, together with 91 counts of serious dangerous interference with road traffic. The higher number of attempted-murder counts reflects everyone the car was driven at along the route, not only those it struck. The Regional Court in Leipzig has still to decide whether to admit the indictment and when any trial might begin. Because a provisional written forensic-psychiatric opinion found no indication of diminished criminal responsibility, the prosecution applied to lift the psychiatric placement and for an arrest warrant. Investigators reported that the accused had been a voluntary psychiatric inpatient until his discharge at the end of April, days before the attack, and that he was already known to police in connection with threats and offences against personal honour in his social circle. No information was given about the background or motive. Investigators had previously said there was no indication of a political or religious motive.

A man stabbed his wife thirteen times in the back in the Donaustadt district of Vienna on 2 May 2026. She was sitting on the floor playing with their three-year-old son at the time. The couple had been married for thirty years and had four children together. The man, then 46, had suspected his wife of an affair after an illness required her to move temporarily to Vienna for treatment, where their older children were living as students. Prosecutors told the court there was no concrete basis for that suspicion. After an argument by telephone he drove to Vienna and tried to persuade her to return home with him immediately; when she refused, he drew a pocket knife with an eight-centimetre blade and attacked her. The victim's adult children came to her aid when they heard her cries, overpowered their father and held him until police arrived. Two of them suffered minor injuries, to a calf and to a right thumb. The stab wounds inflicted on the victim caused multiple penetrating injuries, and she survived. The man was tried for attempted murder before a jury at the Vienna regional court on 9 September 2026. The prosecutor described the attack as a horrifying act of bloodshed and an insidious assault. His defence lawyer argued that he had been emotionally overwhelmed and that an escalating exceptional situation had led to an entirely uncontrolled act. The accused, who came to Austria from Afghanistan, was described in court as well integrated, in steady employment and without previous convictions.

Tijdens de zitting bij de rechtbank in Roermond op 29 juli 2026 werd bekend dat het slachtoffer met tape vastgebonden op een bed werd aangetroffen. Wie haar heeft vastgebonden is uit het onderzoek nog niet gebleken; forensisch onderzoek naar sporen op de tape moet daarover uitsluitsel geven. De verdachte wordt psychisch onderzocht in het Pieter Baan Centrum en kampt volgens het Openbaar Ministerie met psychiatrische problemen. Het motief is vooralsnog onduidelijk.

A man in an electric wheelchair was set on fire on the afternoon of Tuesday 14 April 2026, at about 15:30, outside the shopping centre on the Smaragdplein in Utrecht. Bystanders pulled him from the burning chair and laid him on the ground, and emergency services took him to hospital and later to a specialist burns centre. He suffered third-degree burns to about a fifth of his body and his life was in danger. He has since returned home, but his lawyer says his recovery is uneven and he is in pain around the clock. Two men, aged 55 and 37, were arrested within a day of the attack and are accused of attempted murder, among other offences. At the first public hearing at the court in Utrecht on 28 July 2026 the prosecution said the attack appeared to have been deliberate: one of the men is alleged to have gone into a supermarket, returned with a bottle of methylated spirits and poured it over the victim, and when the first attempt to set him alight faltered the pair are said to have come back to do it more thoroughly. Both men have been referred for psychiatric assessment. The three men were known to each other and investigators have pointed to a conflict between them.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the chest and killed at dawn on 7 April 2026 as he walked home from work in the Ponticelli district of Naples. He had no connection to organised crime. On the account reconstructed by the investigating carabinieri, coordinated by the anti-mafia prosecutors and the juvenile prosecutors, the fatal shot was fired by a 23-year-old acquaintance of the victim. Shortly beforehand the suspect, together with a 17-year-old, had been involved in a firefight against a rival group who had come into the district in a dark SUV. He was near the victim's home, still holding the weapon and boasting about how he had responded, when the shot that killed the victim was fired. The victim was not its intended target. On 14 April 2026 the suspect gave himself up to the carabinieri, accompanied by his lawyer, and was served with a holding order for intentional homicide aggravated by mafia purposes and for aggravated firearms offences. On 26 September 2026 the Court of Cassation upheld an appeal by his lawyers and annulled the charge of intentional homicide, remitting that head of accusation to the court that reviews precautionary measures for re-decision. The firearms counts were not affected.

A 25-year-old man was killed in a flat on ulica Jaworska in Wrocław in April 2026. He had been stabbed three times in the chest. The suspect, a 27-year-old Dutch national, was sought internationally, detained in Belgium and extradited to Poland. He faces a possible sentence of life imprisonment. A 44-year-old Polish woman has been charged as an accomplice.

A male anaesthetist was killed in his home in Sector 3 of Bucharest on the evening of Tuesday 31 March 2026. According to investigators, a 39-year-old woman was in his flat at about 9pm and attacked him with a knife. He suffered multiple wounds, including a chest wound that damaged his heart. After the attack the woman is said to have taken the victim's telephone and set fire to the flat using flammable substances and materials before leaving. Firefighters put out the blaze and brought the victim out of the property; paramedics attempted resuscitation but pronounced him dead. The woman, described as the victim's cleaner, was identified after five days of investigation and found on 5 April at her home in the commune of Ștefăneștii de Jos, Ilfov county. She was detained and subsequently arrested, and is under investigation for murder. On 22 August 2026 police arrested an alleged accomplice, a 47-year-old man who was the subject of national and international arrest notices. He was stopped in traffic in Bucharest, taken to the central criminal investigations service and then held at the Bucharest police detention centre under a 30-day pre-trial warrant issued by the Bucharest Tribunal; he is under investigation for complicity in aggravated robbery and continued procuring. Further suspects were reported to have concealed and sold goods stolen from the victim's home.

A 19-year-old woman was beaten to death in the Käfertaler Wald near Mannheim in the early hours of 11 March 2026. Her body was found by a walker later that day, and a 17-year-old was arrested the same day and remanded in custody. In August 2026 the Mannheim public prosecutor's office charged him with her murder, alleging that he killed her out of jealousy. According to the charge, the suspect struck the victim in the face and head more than a dozen times with his fist in a wooded area near Mannheim, then struck her at least forty times with tree branches as she lay on the ground. The prosecution says he had come to suspect her of infidelity and considered himself dishonoured by remarks she had made, and that he decided to kill her after she repeatedly told him she wanted to end the relationship.

A two-month-old boy died in the village of Zhelyazno, in Plovdiv Province, with his death reported to the authorities on 26 February 2026. His father, a 28-year-old man from the same village, was charged with the intentional murder of the infant, who was described in the indictment as having been in a helpless state. The defendant appeared before the Plovdiv Regional Court on 29 July 2026 for a preparatory hearing. He entered the courtroom with his head bowed and said nothing as he was escorted by guards. The hearing was adjourned to 9 September 2026 because some of the injured parties had not been summoned.

A far-right activist was fatally injured in Lyon on 12 February 2026 during violent confrontations between two groups on the margins of a conference given by a left-wing MEP at the city's Sciences Po campus. He died of his injuries two days later. Video of the confrontation published by a national weekly on 17 February shows two groups of about ten people fighting, with a crutch, an umbrella, a tear-gas canister and a smoke flare used. Nine people have been placed under judicial examination in the investigation into the death — eight for intentional homicide and one, a former parliamentary assistant to a left-wing MP, for complicity in murder by instigation. All nine are in pre-trial detention, and three investigating magistrates are handling the case. The victim was 23 years old. In July 2026 two of those charged filed complaints with the Lyon public prosecutor against fifteen far-right activists present on 12 February, alleging premeditated violence committed in a group, with weapons and with concealed faces. That complaint falls under a separate preliminary investigation into the conduct of the far-right group, which is being conducted independently of the homicide investigation. A lawyer for one of the charged men argues the two proceedings are inseparable and that evidence gathered in the preliminary investigation is being withheld from the magistrates investigating the death. On Tuesday 22 September 2026 eight further people were arrested in connection with the case. Five of them were placed under judicial examination for criminal conspiracy, and four of those also for aggravated violence committed with the use or threat of a weapon, in a group and with the face deliberately concealed, followed by an incapacity not exceeding eight days. The prosecutor sought pre-trial detention for three of them and judicial supervision for the other two. These eight were arrested over possible participation in the brawls that took place on the day of the victim's death, and their charges fall under the separate preliminary investigation into the violence rather than under the homicide investigation, whose nine charges are unchanged.

The victim, a 2-year-old girl, died in Bordighera from acute cerebral hemorrhage caused by a blow to the head sustained within 48 hours of her death. An autopsy also found two additional internal hemorrhages and signs of chronic malnutrition and neglect dating back roughly a year; doctors said she could have survived had an ambulance been called in time. The victim's mother and her partner are in custody, charged with aggravated maltreatment resulting in death; both maintain their innocence. She was found lifeless on 9 February 2026 at her mother's home in Montenero, a hillside district of Bordighera. The child's funeral was held on 14 August 2026 at the church of the Immacolata in Bordighera, attended by hundreds of people and led by the bishop of the Sanremo-Ventimiglia diocese. The victim's mother, initially authorised to attend, was barred the previous day when the investigating judge revoked the permission on grounds of public order and security. The child's biological father, detained in an unrelated case, attended under escort by the prison police.

A 20-year-old university student was stabbed to death in Oxford Street, close to De Montfort University's Innovation Centre in Leicester, shortly after 5pm on 3 February 2026. A 19-year-old student at a different Leicester university went on trial for his murder at Leicester Crown Court on 10 August 2026, denying charges that also included possessing a bladed article and failing to provide the PIN for his phone. On 25 August 2026, after a two-week trial, the jury found him not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter, of having an offensive weapon and of failing to provide the PIN. He was sentenced the same day to a total of 10 years' imprisonment. Passing sentence, the judge said the defendant had developed a "seething resentment" towards the victim, and told him: "You took a knife to the fight, you used it, this was not a one-off thrust of the knife but five separate applications and it should have been obvious to you this carried a high risk of serious harm." Opening the prosecution case, counsel for the Crown told the jury that the two men had known each other from online gaming and had fallen out over money the defendant believed he was owed, including over a watch the victim had given him to sell which turned out to be a counterfeit. The Crown alleges the defendant attacked the victim in the street over that perceived debt. The jury was told the encounter lasted seconds and was captured on dashcam footage, that the victim was stabbed five times in the chest, and that one wound, 13cm deep, penetrated his heart and caused his death. Four other chest wounds did not contribute to death and a defensive wound was found on his hand. He collapsed in the street and never regained consciousness. A passing driver stopped to help him.

A 28-year-old man was shot in the head and killed on 26 January 2026 in the wooded area of Rogoredo, in Milan, a location known for drug dealing. Prosecutors allege the fatal shot was fired from a distance of about 30 metres. A 41-year-old former officer of the Mecenate police precinct is accused of the killing, which prosecutors say took place in the course of an anti-drug-trafficking operation. On 31 July 2026 the Milan prosecutor's office requested that he be sent for immediate trial, skipping the preliminary hearing stage. The accusation carries the aggravating factors of premeditation and abuse of public office, and cites threats the accused is alleged to have made against the victim before the shooting. An 87-year-old woman was killed on 19 January 2026 in her room at a senior residence in the Döbling district of Vienna. According to the indictment, the suspect went to her room, pushed her onto the bed, strangled her and is believed to have suffocated her with a pillow. He is then alleged to have opened the safe in her room and taken the jewellery inside it along with at least 500 euros in cash. The suspect and the victim had known each other for some time. He is reported to have been a regular visitor to the residence, where a relative of his partner lives. From December 2024 onwards he is said to have repeatedly borrowed money from the woman, ending up owing her more than 20,000 euros which, contrary to an agreement between them, he did not repay. The 61-year-old has been charged with murder and is due to stand trial at the Vienna regional court on 13 August 2026.
