A 22-year-old man was fatally injured during a friendly football match at a sports ground in Almada, in the district of Setúbal, on 27 March 2026. He was treated at the scene by the emergency medical service and taken to the Garcia de Orta hospital in Almada, where he was admitted in a serious condition and later died of injuries inflicted to his head and abdomen. On 7 October 2026 the public prosecution service announced that it had formally charged a 16-year-old with aggravated qualified homicide and possession of a prohibited weapon. According to the accusation he struck the victim with a sickle with a curved blade 23 centimetres long, causing the wounds that led to his death. Both the accused and the victim are foreign nationals. The investigation was directed by the criminal investigation and prosecution department in Almada, with the assistance of the judicial police.
