The victim, a 53-year-old male sports journalist, was found dead in an agricultural field in the Cioffi district of Eboli, in the province of Salerno, on the morning of 19 July 2026, close to the Strada Statale 7 bis. Firefighters called to a blaze at the site extinguished the fire and discovered the body, which had been burned; carabinieri, forensic officers and the duty prosecutor attended before dawn. An autopsy was carried out on 22 July, and investigators have not yet established whether the body was set alight before or after death. In the early hours of 25 July, carabinieri from Salerno, supported by the ROS technical investigations unit and the Puglia hunter squadron, located a man they consider responsible for the killing hiding in an abandoned farmhouse and placed him under a fermo, a pre-charge precautionary detention order. The investigation is coordinated by the Salerno prosecutor's office, which is reported to be treating a private motive as the main line of inquiry.
