A 32-year-old man was found killed on the evening of 5 August 2026 in a holding cell at the La Dogaia prison in Prato, Tuscany, after a fight between inmates. He was held in the wing reserved for sex offenders, sharing the cell with three other prisoners. A post-mortem inspection found a head injury caused by a blunt object and bleeding from the nose, along with bruising inside the upper lip and a laceration to the left side of the forehead. The Prato public prosecutor's office is investigating the death as manslaughter arising from an intentional assault (omicidio preterintenzionale). The inquiry, led by prosecutors and carried out by the prison police and the Prato flying squad, is working to reconstruct events, identify who caused the death, and establish the motive for the fight. Forensic police also attended the scene. No arrest has been reported. Prosecutors described the death as part of a continuing wave of violence at the overcrowded facility, which holds some 640 inmates in cells that in many cases — including the one where the killing occurred — hold four prisoners each.
