Early on Sunday 6 September 2026 — reported at about 06:30 — the GNR was alerted by residents and family members that a 73-year-old woman had been found dead inside her home in the village of Póvoa da Galega, in the parish of Milharado, Mafra, in the district of Lisbon. She had been stabbed. The suspect is her grandson, who lived with her; according to a police source the motive is unknown and the two had a good relationship. After the killing the suspect is reported to have caused disturbances and damage at a hotel and at several homes near the one he shared with his grandmother. A police source described him as behaving erratically, allegedly after taking drugs, for which he was already known to the authorities. He was detained by the GNR and the investigation passed to the Polícia Judiciária. Brought before a judge at the court in Sintra for a first judicial questioning, he was remanded in custody at the Lisbon prison to await trial.
