A foreign couple, a 79-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman, were found dead on the afternoon of Friday 11 September 2026 inside a water cistern at their home in Lagos, in the district of Faro. According to the Polícia Judiciária, the victims were beaten with a blunt object at the property, and the suspect then dragged the bodies into the cistern to hide them and tried to break them down with chemicals. The suspect, a 45-year-old man who worked for the couple as a caretaker, was found by the GNR near the scene carrying a large amount of cash and valuables believed to belong to the victims. He was arrested on suspicion of two counts of aggravated homicide and desecration of a corpse, and after a first judicial hearing before the investigating judge in Portimão he was remanded in pre-trial detention. The motive remains unknown, and the investigation is continuing into whether anyone else was involved.
