A man stabbed his wife thirteen times in the back in the Donaustadt district of Vienna on 2 May 2026. She was sitting on the floor playing with their three-year-old son at the time. The couple had been married for thirty years and had four children together. The stab wounds inflicted on the victim caused multiple penetrating injuries, and she survived. The man was tried for attempted murder before a jury at the Vienna regional court on 9 September 2026. The prosecutor described the attack as a horrifying act of bloodshed and an insidious assault. His defence lawyer argued that he had been emotionally overwhelmed and that an escalating exceptional situation had led to an entirely uncontrolled act. The accused, who came to Austria from Afghanistan, was described in court as well integrated, in steady employment and without previous convictions.
