On Thursday 3 September 2026, masked attackers struck a 44-year-old man with a hammer on the Grote Markt in Tienen, Flemish Brabant. He was injured and taken to hospital. The victim, a journalist living in Belgium as a political refugee since 2024 and known as an outspoken critic of the Congolese government, had already been attacked twice in a little over a year. Two men aged 25 were arrested shortly after the attack, and on 5 October 2026 police searched four addresses in Zaventem and detained three further suspects. The investigating judge has placed all five suspects, aged between 18 and 25, under arrest on suspicion of attempted murder committed as a group, and they are in prison. Police described the case as part of a growing pattern of crimes committed for payment on behalf of others.
