Sommario

A 23-year-old woman was stabbed in the back at about 21:30 on the evening of Wednesday 23 September 2026 in largo San Tommaso d'Aquino, in the historic centre of Salerno. She was alone at the time. On the police account she was struck from behind by a stranger, without a word being spoken, and was beaten as well as cut. The wound at the nape was about seven centimetres deep, and she suffered a wound to the left hand while trying to protect herself. A passer-by raised the alarm, reporting an injured young woman to the state police, and a patrol car attended. She had walked several hundred metres seeking help before collapsing, and lost a great deal of blood. She was taken to hospital under the highest-priority code, was given a transfusion, and was later discharged with a prognosis of 20 days. She lives in the province of Salerno. Ten days after the attack, a 57-year-old man was traced to his home town in the province of Avellino and placed under arrest on a charge of attempted murder. Investigators identified him from surveillance footage covering the area around the attack, and the breakthrough followed the circulation of those images to police forces and the press, when officers in his home town recognised him. Clothing said to have been worn during the attack was seized at his house. After being discharged from hospital the victim was heard by the public prosecutor and identified him from a photograph, saying she had not known her attacker. On 5 October 2026 the investigating judge declined to validate the initial detention but ordered the suspect held in pre-trial custody. He has exercised his right not to answer questions and, through his lawyer, denies involvement. The motive for the attack is not yet established.
